Yesterday we ran a post revealing that Taika Waititi's next film would not be Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder, but a smaller, as-yet-unnamed project for Fox Searchlight. We didn't know what it was called, what it was about, or who might be in it, but we knew we were happy just to have another Taika Waititi movie to look forward to, and we were thankful for it.
Today, we've got some of those questions answered: as reported by Deadline, Waititi's mystery project is actually a dramatized retelling of a 2014 British soccer documentary by the name of Next Goal Wins. For those of you who've not seen Mike Brett and Steve Jamison's film, here's a description:
"[Next Goal Wins] follows Dutch coach Thomas Rongen who attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners."
So, you can imagine what attracted Waititi to the material: it's an underdog story, plenty of room for comedy, probably possessed of a gigantic heart. Y'know, fairly classic Taika Waititi territory. It also sounds like precisely the sort of thing Waititi could knock out in a relatively short window, a nice little palate cleanser before heading back into the gigantic world of the MCU. We're into it.
Nothing further to report at this time, but as we mentioned yesterday: this one's supposed to go in front of the cameras this fall, so expect further updates in the none-too-distant future.
