Marvel’s SHANG-CHI Finally Gets Its Director

Everyone welcome Destin Daniel Cretton.

We’re at a weird place in the MCU. We know Endgame is coming (oh by the way, you should probably pick up a copy of our kickass magazine for that). We also know Captain Marvel is a big hit. There’s a Spider-Man movie coming later this summer. But beyond that, it starts getting a little hazy. There are a lot of things we’re pretty sure we can look forward to, but their respective productions are somewhat less certain.

Shang-Chi is one of the more curious of those movies. Until now, it’s only had a writer, Jean-Claude Van Johnson’s Dave Callaham. Things are starting to get moving, however, as the film now has a director.

Deadline is reporting Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle director Destin Daniel Cretton will be taking on the martial arts extravaganza. This name in and of itself isn’t all that exciting. It offers hope that the character and emotion will be strong, but the film’s action prowess is still a question mark, maybe reliant on Marvel’s in-house wizards to make things sing. Sometimes this can totally work (the Ant-Man movies), sometimes it can kind of work (Doctor Strange, Black Panther’s third act) sometimes it doesn’t work that well (Captain Marvel - please don’t kill me but I didn’t think the action looked good!).

In any case, any news pushing this project forward is exciting. I’m already super in the bag for Marvel films, I can’t help it. Throw a movie focused on martial arts in there and I’m basically helpless.
