Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE Has Found Its Baron Harkonnen

Stellan Skarsgard probably isn't gonna look this gnarly, though.

Even if you've seen and long since forgotten most of David Lynch's Dune, there's a good chance you remember Kenneth McMillain's performance as the villainous Baron Harkonnen (Vlad, if ya nasty). Venomously evil, constantly scheming, covered in disgusting growths and possessed with a literal taste for the young, McMillain's Harkonnen is a villain for the ages. Outside of Kyle MacLachlan riding a Sandworm and Sting's winged diaper, he might be the film's most memorable element.

Well, as you know, Denis Villeneuve's working on a new adaptation of Dune, which means the time has come for him to name his own Baron Harkonnen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that man is Stellan Skarsgard. He'll be joining the already-cast Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dave Bautista, who previously worked with Villeneuve on last year's Blade Runner 2049.

Skarsgard's an interesting choice for this part! We're not entirely sure we see what Villeneuve sees here, but he's more than earned our trust at this point, and we're certainly curious to see what the production does with the character (our prediction: Villeneuve's version will be a smidge less grotesque than Lynch's take). According to THR, production begins this spring; hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see some of the character designs Villeneuve and company have cooked up.

Anyway, nothing further to report at this time, but we'll keep you informed as further Dune updates roll in. Stay tuned.
