If you thought Sam Worthington's career of transforming into aliens was limited to the Avatar film(s), think again. The Titan is coming for you, whether you want it to or not. Spoilers: the title somehow refers to both a character and a location.
So here we have Sam Worthington, living on a dying Earth, training to become an augmented human to start the colonisation process of Saturn's moon Titan. First off, being "augmented" seems like something that doesn't involve training, so Sam's warning bells really should've gone off early. But not content with swimming like Aquaman, his character starts to mutate into a hairless, alien beast, and the whole tone changes from hopeful space-exploration movie into...a sci-fi slasher of some kind?
What the heck is going on here? This trailer really, seriously feels like a rough cut. Its pacing is all wrong, the sound design feels incomplete, and it appears to chart the entirety of the movie, including what I assume is the film's final shot. More importantly, the tone is just all over the place. And that creature design! I get the instinct to turn Sam Worthington into a lumpy, non-speaking alien, but damn, son. Is there going to be some touching family drama in this thing, too? I sure hope so.
If anything, I feel a little sorry for Lennart Ruff, for whom The Titan is his feature directorial debut. The film debuted last weekend at the Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival, and I cannot wait to hear what it's like. If it's half as ridiculous as its trailer, it'll be absolutely incredible. We need more insane genre movies in this franchise-heavy world.
