We’ve been up to our necks in alternative ways of approaching Star Trek in the last 24 hours. Obviously, the biggest bit of news is the notion that Quentin Tarantino could be involved in the next Star Trek movie (along with this look at what that could mean).
But then we also had the trailer for Please Stand By, a movie where Dakota Fanning writes a 500-page Star Trek spec script and travels across the country to deliver it. And then you have The Orville on television. If we can’t get the Star Trek we hoped for from actual televised Star Trek, at least we can still get it everywhere else.
We’ve known that Black Mirror was going to enter these waters as well with its episode "U.S.S. Callister", and now we have a teaser to go along with it:
I like it! While it seems obvious that this will end up being some sort of simulation that tortures and destroys someone’s soul (I don’t watch Black Mirror yet, but this is my outside perspective on the show speaking out), I’m still heartened by the cheesy joy this Star Trek pastiche is putting out there and find it extremely likely that this will be the first Black Mirror episode I watch. Hopefully it’s as good as it looks here.
